Controversy has erupted following Vice President Kamala Harris's announcement of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate for the 2024 presidential election. Critics have pointed to Walz's connections with Dar Al-Farooq Islamic Center, a mosque in Minnesota alleged to have ties to ISIS recruitment and extremist teachings.
Governor Walz has been documented attending events at Dar Al-Farooq, an Islamic center catering primarily to the Somali community in Minneapolis. The center has gained notoriety for being a recruitment hub for ISIS terrorists, according to FBI reports. Critics argue that Walz's association with the mosque raises serious questions about his suitability as a vice-presidential candidate.
The controversy intensified with the revelation of a report based on FBI statistics. This report highlighted that Minneapolis's Somali community has become a significant recruitment center for terrorists. The FBI statistics showed that 45 Somalis left the U.S. to join terrorist organizations like al-Shabab and ISIS, with a dozen more arrested for attempting to join ISIS as of 2018. Many of these individuals attended Dar Al-Farooq, Minnesota's most popular Somali mosque.
Imam Waleed Idris al-Meneesey, who leads Dar Al-Farooq, is at the heart of the controversy. Al-Meneesey has been documented making inflammatory statements, including calls for the killing of Jews and urging Muslims to adhere strictly to Sharia law, rejecting Western legal systems. His leadership and teachings at Dar Al-Farooq have sparked significant concern among critics who argue that such connections are alarming for a public official.
Adding to the controversy is a 2008 declaration by the Assembly of Muslim Jurists Association of America (AMJA), where al-Meneesey sits on the FATWA committee. This declaration advised Muslims against cooperating with law enforcement in non-Islamic countries, including the FBI. This stance is seen as particularly problematic given the ongoing fight against domestic and international terrorism.
Critics have shared images and screenshots online, showcasing Governor Walz's presence at Dar Al-Farooq and highlighting his and Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan's public support for the center. Flanagan's social media post declaring their solidarity with Dar Al-Farooq has been cited as further evidence of the administration's controversial ties.
The backlash has been swift and fierce. Opponents argue that a vice-presidential candidate with such associations is a national security risk. They question how voters can support a candidate linked to a mosque whose imam advocates for violence and non-cooperation with law enforcement.
Supporters of Walz and Harris dismiss these criticisms as politically motivated attacks aimed at undermining their campaign. They argue that Walz's outreach to diverse communities is part of his effort to promote inclusivity and understanding.
The controversy surrounding Governor Tim Walz's ties to Dar Al-Farooq Islamic Center highlights the complex and often contentious intersection of politics, religion, and national security. As the election season heats up, these issues will likely remain in the spotlight, challenging candidates to address and navigate the criticisms head-on.
