Waspito, a Cameroonian health startup, has successfully raised $2.5 million to enhance its operations in Francophone Africa. This funding, provided by several investors including DP World, Newtown Partners, Saviu Ventures, AAIC Investment, Axian Ventures, and Health54, is a significant step for the company in expanding its unique healthcare services.
Founded by Jean Lobe Lobe at the onset of 2020, Waspito emerged as a timely solution during the COVID-19 pandemic. It offers a health-focused social network platform that connects patients with doctors via instant video consultations. Unlike traditional telemedicine services that require pre-registration and scheduled appointments, Waspito allows users immediate access to healthcare professionals.
Revolutionizing Telemedicine and Healthcare Access
The startup's approach to healthcare is innovative and user-friendly. When logging into Waspito, users can immediately choose from a list of available doctors for consultation. If a doctor suggests medical tests, Waspito coordinates with partner laboratories to collect samples directly from patients' homes. The company also facilitates medication delivery and has partnerships with local hospitals for more comprehensive care.
Waspito's strategy also includes financial accessibility. Patients can pay for consultations through various methods, including insurance, which incentivizes doctors to be readily available online. Additionally, the platform offers anonymous support groups for specific diseases, providing tailored advice and community support.
Expanding Reach with Hybrid Clinics
As part of its expansion, Waspito has ventured into Ivory Coast and plans to extend to Senegal and Gabon. In Ivory Coast, the company is experimenting with a hybrid model by setting up mini-clinics in collaboration with La Poste Corporation. These clinics, staffed by nurses, will enable patients to connect with doctors virtually and access other healthcare services.
This hybrid approach is crucial for reaching populations in Africa where internet access and smartphones are still limited. Waspito aims to implement this model in Cameroon and Senegal, bringing healthcare closer to underserved communities.
Impact and Future Prospects
Waspito has made significant strides since its inception, reaching 650,000 users in Cameroon and Ivory Coast, onboarding 950 doctors, and facilitating 60,000 consultations. The startup, recognized as the best health startup in Africa at the VivaTech awards, is poised for further growth with the recent funding.
Jean Lobe Lobe emphasizes that healthcare should be accessible to everyone, and Waspito's initiatives, including the mini-clinics, are key to connecting with populations that have limited access to healthcare services. With its innovative approach and the recent financial boost, Waspito is set to transform healthcare accessibility in Africa.
