Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Norway imposed sanctions on Israeli ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, accusing them of inciting violence against Palestinians in the West Bank. Both ministers, who live in settlements, now face asset freezes and travel bans. The move marks a rare rift with the U.S., as Secretary of State Marco Rubio condemned the sanctions, claiming they undermine efforts to end the Gaza conflict and secure the release of hostages held by Hamas since October 2023.
British Foreign Minister David Lammy, alongside his counterparts, stated that the two Israeli ministers promoted extremist actions and human rights abuses, justifying the coordinated sanctions. The Israeli government, calling the decision "outrageous," is planning a special meeting to respond.
Smotrich, speaking at a new settlement in Hebron Hills, dismissed the sanctions and reaffirmed plans to continue building. Meanwhile, the U.S. separately announced sanctions on a prominent Palestinian human rights group and five charities accused of aiding Hamas and other militant groups.
Tensions have escalated amid Israel’s ongoing military operations in Gaza, launched after a deadly Hamas attack that killed 1,200 people and led to 251 hostages. The war has since claimed over 54,000 Palestinian lives, according to Gaza authorities.
The five sanctioning nations stressed their continued support for Israel's security but called for an immediate ceasefire, release of hostages, and increased humanitarian aid. They emphasized that there must be no illegal displacement of Palestinians or territorial reductions in Gaza.
This coordinated action adds to growing international pressure on Prime Minister Netanyahu, who faces criticism over humanitarian conditions and his handling of the war. Despite differences, Western leaders reiterated their commitment to a two-state solution and long-term peace in the region.
