Microsoft has just admitted that there is a major bug in the Windows 10 October update that is yet to be addressed. Many had complained about how the overwrite consent prompt was missing from .ZIP files when the update rolled out, now Microsoft has confirmed that this could lead to data loss.
“With the Windows 10 October 2018 Update, if you copy or move files from a .ZIP file (without first ‘extracting’ the contents) into a new destination folder that contains duplicate filenames or is write-protected, you don’t get a ‘Do you want to replace these files’ prompt. It will appear that the files were overwritten, when in fact the copy action for those files is not executed and files have not been overwritten,” Microsoft explained in a post.
The company also advised users not to cut/paste items from a .ZIP file because it may result in unintentional data deletion. Instead, users should fully extract the zip folder before they copy the files to a new folder.
This is a serious problem for Windows 10 because nobody wants to lose important data like that. Of course, the deleted files can still be recovered from the recycle bin. That is if they are not deleted from the bin. Users may also recover deleted files from the temporary file directory. To do that, press the Windows logo and R keys simultaneously to open the Run command box, then type “%temp%” and click OK to access the folder containing temporary files. Now all you have to do is to find the find the file and move it to a new location.
The Windows 10 October update was initially released earlier this month during the company’s Surface hardware event in New York City, but it has been put on hold due to reports of missing files. According to the post, Microsoft is still looking for a way to fix this bug and they may find a solution as early as November.
