Although it hasn’t always been the healthiest situation, the competition between Microsoft’s Xbox and Sony’s PlayStation consoles have led to some of the greatest innovations in the video game industry. Thanks to the Xbox Scorpio, it seems this contest is about to heat up after dying down quite a bit in recent years by claiming the title of most powerful gaming console on the market.
Microsoft took a big risk sending its newest console to one of its biggest critics, but it seems to have paid off in the end. Eurogamer just released details on what the Xbox Scorpio’s capabilities are and while there are a few essential details missing, it’s still the gaming monster that Microsoft promised it would be.
Digital Foundry was given the chance to preview the Scorpio at Microsoft’s campus in Redmond. The actual name of the console product wasn’t released, though, it can be reasonably surmised that its codename will not be making the final cut.
In any case, the specs themselves proved to be beyond even what the publication was expecting and confirmed to blow the PlayStation 4 Pro out of the water. For the CPU, the “Eight custom x86 cores clocked at 2.3GHz” of the Scorpio slightly surpassed the “Eight Jaguar cores” of the PS4 Pro, which clocked at only 2.1GHz.
For the GPU, the Scorpio stuns with its 1172MHz performance, along with the 12GB GDDR5 Ram. As for the display, it would seem that Microsoft delivered on the smooth 4K capability that seems to be a huge deal to gamers these days. PC World was also quick to point out that this resolution extends to more than just games as the upgraded console also hosts video content that supports 4K.
Of course, it’s worth noting that these are just on-paper specs and the full gaming experience won’t be on the table until the Scorpio is in the hands of gamers. For now, however, Microsoft can revel in the fact that its console is a much bigger beast than the PS4 Pro.
