Microsoft plans to revamp the Xbox home screen UI to provide a more personalized experience. The update and new features, however, will not go live anytime soon as the company intends to conduct a “series of experiments” before launching these changes.
The Xbox parent company announced its plans in a blog post on Thursday, saying the tests for the Xbox home screen updates will be carried out for several months starting this week. The first round of tests for the home screen revamp will focus on changes in the layout, design, and ease of access.
The first test will introduce a new “Jump back in” row on the Xbox home screen, allowing players to easily return to the games they recently played. Xbox Home will also have new dedicated tiles for some system apps, including Settings, Store, Search, and My Games & Apps.
Xbox is also adding a new section on the home screen where testers will find “new game channels and collections.” The company said this would present players with curated recommendations of games based on titles they have already played. In this new feature, Game Pass subscribers may also find suggestions for new games to try to make the best out of their subscriptions.
The recommendation feature could be a promising addition to the Xbox Home UI, especially for Game Pass members. The service offers more than a hundred games, and even more via EA Play for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers. This could offer a chance for players to explore less popular titles that are worthy of trying.
Access to the first test, however, appears to be very limited. Xbox says it will only include “a random subset of Xbox Insiders in the Alpha Skip-Ahead ring.” It is unclear if the upcoming experiments will be available to more testers. But the best chance Xbox players have to join these experiments is to sign up for the Xbox Insider program.
Xbox did not say how many tests it will conduct for the major home screen revamp. The company only noted that it would happen in multiple rounds of experiments over several months. The final lineup of improvements and new features will be released sometime in 2023.
