Natalie Carvalho

Senior Research Fellow, The University of Melbourne
Natalie Carvalho is a Senior Research Fellow in the Health Economics Unit, Centre for Health Policy, at Melbourne School of Population and Global Health. She is a former recipient of the University of Melbourne McKenzie Postdoctoral Fellowship, which was established to attract outstanding recent doctoral graduates to the University in areas of research priority for the university and its faculties, and in particular to recruit new researchers who have the potential to build and lead cross-disciplinary collaborative research activities inside and across faculties.

Natalie's research focused primarily on priority-setting of health interventions in low- and middle-income countries using cost-effectiveness analysis. Her research further aims to incorporate equity and budgetary considerations into cost-effectiveness analyses of interventions to improve maternal and child health in low- and middle-income countries, in particular in relation to childhood vaccines. She has also worked on developing disability weights for injuries and exploring the use of these weights as the basis for a compensation schedule for personal injuries. Natalie's research interests include health inequalities, maternal and child health, immunizations, and quality of care, with a focus on developing countries and marginalized populations. She has conducted impact evaluations and health economic evaluations to inform allocation of resources in resource-poor settings. Natalie received her BSc (Chemistry) from McGill University, MPH (Epidemiology) from Boston University, and PhD in Health Policy (Decision Sciences) from Harvard University.
