Janne Lindqvist

Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Rutgers University

Janne Lindqvist is an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at Rutgers University. His work is frequently featured in the popular media including several times in Scientific American, IEEE Spectrum, MIT Technology Review, NPR, WHYY Radio, Yahoo! Janne directs the Rutgers Human-Computer Interaction and Security Engineering group.

Janne Lindqvist received his Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in 2005, and Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) degree in 2009, both in Computer Science and Engineering from Helsinki University of Technology, Finland. From Fall 2009 until Fall 2011, Janne was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow with the Human-Computer Interaction Institute, which is part of the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University.

Janne’s work focuses on hard real-world problems, and currently his group and his colleagues work includes usable and secure authentication, mobile privacy, physical-world crowdsourcing, measuring implicit racism in situ, social protocols for wireless networking, and ecological field studies on non-suicidal self-injurious behavior. His awards include the Best Paper Award from MobiCom’12, the Best Paper Nominee Award from UbiComp’14, and Sustainable Jersey Creation & Innovation Award 2014.

Before joining academia, Janne was a co-founder of a wireless networks company called Radionet, which operated in 24 countries before being sold to Florida-based Airspan Networks Inc. in November 2005.
