Assistant Professor of Higher Education Leadership; Director of the Race & Intersectional Studies for Educational Equity (RISE) Center, Colorado State University
Dr. OiYan Poon is an Assistant Professor of Higher Education Leadership in the School of Education and Director of the RISE (Race & Intersectional Studies for Educational Equity) Center at Colorado State University. Her research focuses on the racial politics of college access, affirmative action, and Asian Americans.

Dr. Poon was the 2016 recipient of the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE) Council on Ethnic Participation Mildred B. Garcia Junior Exemplary Scholarship Award and a 2014 recipient of the ACPA Emerging Scholar Award. In 2018, she co-authored an amicus brief on behalf of 531 social scientists supporting race-conscious admissions in the SFFA v. Harvard case (http://asianamericancivilrights.org/press-release-academic-experts). She also received a Spencer Foundation grant to study how race is operationalized and included in holistic admissions practices.

Before pursuing her Ph.D. at UCLA, Dr. Poon worked in multicultural affairs and Asian American student services at George Mason University and at the University of California at Davis, where she also served as a comprehensive review reader for undergraduate admissions.
