The latest update iOS 12.1.1 is now officially released. Among the new functions and features it brings, many Apple fans are likely most excited about wider availability of the eSIM support.
Even before the release of iOS 12.1.1, the dual SIM support was recognized as one of the newest feature exclusive on iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max. Obviously, this functionality has been available on Android-powered smartphones for years but it was still a welcomed improvement among Apple fans.
However, there is a catch — Apple’s approach to dual SIM support is quite different. The above-mentioned devices can only accommodate one nano-SIM card like the previous iPhone models. The second SIM can only be used through the eSIM technology and its availability is somehow dependent on telecommunication companies. Through iOS 12.1.1, iPhone 2018 models in the United States can now enjoy the dual SIM feature as well.
In the Apple Support page, it is indicated that the dual SIM support for iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max was first made available with the iOS 12 update. However, 9To5Mac pointed out that the feature only became available to United States customers through the iOS 12.1.1 update. And, at the moment, AT&T is the only carrier offering it but Apple is expecting more carriers to follow likely in the next iOS 12 updates.
iOS 12.1.1 has also added new features related to navigating camera functions, especially during a FaceTime call. The latest software update is introducing a one-tap button that allows users to easily switch from rear to front-facing camera while on FaceTime with their friends.
iPhone users, especially those with the iPhone X or later, are highly recommended to install the iOS 12.1.1 update. Aside from new features, it also comes with a patch for previously reported Face ID-related issues.
