There have been speculations that Apple might expand the use of mini-LED display technology this year by adding it to the upcoming 11-inch iPad Pro. However, one of analyst Ming-Chi Kuo’s latest predictions suggests that it is unlikely to happen for the smaller tablet or any other upcoming Apple products.
Kuo said last week that he does not expect Apple to launch “new mini-LED products” in 2022 due to production costs. He reiterated this prediction on Wednesday, along with the clarification, “More precisely, there may be no new products with the new mini-LED display size in 2022.”
In an email conversation with MacRumors, the analyst used the case of the next generation of iPad Pros, for example. While he expects Apple to launch a new 12.9-inch iPad Pro with a mini-LED display, he does not expect the company to implement mini-LED adoption for other products this year, including the 11-inch iPad Pro.
This represents a change in Kuo’s forecast, who reportedly said in a note to investors last July (via Apple Insider) that the new 12.9-inch iPad Pro, 11-inch iPad Pro, and the new MacBook Air could be the new products with mini-LED displays to launch in 2022. Since then, Apple fans have been waiting to see if the tech giant would expand the use of mini-LED to the smaller tablet.
Those expectations may have increased after Apple announced earlier this month that the new iPad Air would be powered with the M1 chip. Some tech fans argued that Apple may need to introduce another upgrade for the smaller iPad Pro to make it more distinct from the new iPad Air.
Meanwhile, Kuo’s latest predictions of Apple’s mini-LED adoption strategy also suggest that there will be no new Mac devices using this display technology. This conflicts with a recent report from another notable analyst, Ross Young, who reiterated that a new Apple product with a 27-inch screen using a mini-LED solution could be announced in June.
Young added that it could be marketed as the “Studio Display Pro” and that its production might have started already. Apple unveiled the new Mac Studio that can be ordered with the M1 Max and the new M1 Ultra chip. The powerful Mac desktop is advertised along with a new 27-inch external monitor called Studio Display.
