‘Jessica Jones’ season 2 will feature an all-female directorial line-up as revealed by showrunner Melissa Rosenberg. The series is set to go into production in time for a 2018 premiere.
According to /Film, the incoming season of the Netflix web television series starring Krysten Ritter in the titular role is set to be directed exclusively by an all-female line-up. Showrunner and executive producer Melissa Rosenberg reportedly made the announcement during a panel at “Transforming Hollywood 7: Diversifying Entertainment” at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism.
Rosenberg was reportedly adamant at hiring only women to direct each of the 13 episodes of the incoming season in response to a male-dominated industry. Since the season 2 is still in early days of production, the names of the female directors have yet to be revealed.
According to Teen Vogue, Ritter reacted to the news on her Twitter account. The now-deleted post stated, "Nothing makes me more proud and emotional and excited. This is f*cking HUGE. [Melissa Rosenberg] thank heavens for you.”
Actors Rachael Taylor and Finn Jones also echoed their own sentiments on their respective Twitter accounts. Taylor plays Patricia “Trish” Walker, Rytter’s on-screen adoptive sister and best friend in the series while Jones plays Danny Rand a.k.a. Iron Fist on the upcoming Netflix show ‘Iron Fist’.
According to The Verge, the release date for season 2 remains unconfirmed but the series is expected to go into production in time for a possible 2018 release.
During a previous interview, Rosenberg revealed that the series intends to tackle more social issues and female relationships on top of being a superhero show. She said, Rosenberg said, “The first season we hit a lot of them — we had issues of choice, interracial relationships, domestic violence, issues of consent. We kind of ran the gamut there a little bit, obviously all about feminism and being a woman in this world. It’s a very feminist show, and intentionally so.”
Rosenberg added, “So I’m not quite sure what the social issues yet that we’re dealing with [in season 2]. We’re just trying to find some resonance for her character and a new place to push her, to give Krysten something new to play and really push the boundaries of the character.”
‘Jessica Jones’ is a superhero web television series that first premiered on Netlix on November 2015. It is produced by Marvel Television, ABC Studios, and Tall Girl Productions.
