For some time now, artificial intelligence and machine learning have been the subject of intense debate and speculation as to what they are capable of. Recently, an album was released with the music created completely by an AI with the help of a YouTube singer. This is the first case of a machine creating its own tunes being released in such a public manner.
The AI is called Amper and it was developed by a company made up of engineers and music composers. In collaboration with the YouTube singer Taryn Southern, an album was created where the music was created by the AI and the lyrics were provided by the singer, Futurism reports. Anyone who wants to check out the end product can watch the video for the song “Break Free.”
In the video’s comments section, Southern provided details with regards to the album called I AM AI and hints at future clips containing behind-the-scenes footage.
“Hi everyone! This is the first track off my upcoming album, I AM AI, composed entirely with artificial intelligence. If you'd like to learn more about how I made this, I'll be releasing a behind-the-scenes video soon,” Southern wrote.
Southern also spoke to CNN, noting how working with an AI is so different because it simply doesn’t have the same limitations as humans. Once again, the superiority of machines is highlighted in the field of art, which was previously unthinkable.
“In a funny way, I have a new song-writing partner who doesn't get tired and has this endless knowledge of music making," Southern said. "But I feel like I get to own my vision; I iterate and choose what I like and don't like. There's a lot more control."
On that note, it’s worth pointing out that Amper was never meant to work on its own. It still needed the help of Southern and its creators to make certain adjustments to suit certain songs.
