AUSTIN, Texas, May 13, 2016 -- A group of 29 student athletes from Texas A&M University are giving their time this week to serve people in the poorest country in the Western hemisphere. The group, including quarterback Trevor Knight and 14 other football players, are on a mission trip through Mission of Hope, Haiti (MOH).
Knight, who transferred to A&M from The University of Oklahoma, is a veteran of Mission of Hope, having gone on 3 previous trips while at OU. He believes the experience is life changing.
"It's a culture changer. It allows you to connect on a completely different level," says Knight. "It was going down there and intimately talking to your teammates and letting Haiti get into to your heart. It changed not only the culture of our locker room, but also our campus."
Their time in Haiti, where 80% of the population lives in poverty, will include painting houses, digging trenches, and working with children.
Knight says the trip not only allows them to help the people of Haiti, but it builds deeper comradery among teammates and the other student athletes participating.
Among the other football players on the trip are defensive ends Myles Garrett and Daeshon Hall, quarterback Jake Hubenak, defensive tackle Daylon Mack, offensive lineman Koda Martin and receiver Josh Reynolds. Several members of the volleyball and soccer teams as well as an equestrian team member are also on the trip.
"We love to see student athletes pour their hearts into serving others here in Haiti. It's an opportunity for them to impact a lot of lives, and it helps them grow in ways they didn't expect," says MOH President Brad Johnson.
This weekend, athletes from The University of Oklahoma will also head to Haiti to spend a week serving at Mission of Hope.
Mission of Hope, Haiti exists to bring life transformation to every man, woman and child in Haiti. They are currently feeding over 90,000 children daily, educating over 6,500 students, training over 3,000 farmers, and providing medical care to over 30,000 patients.
