Apple is currently in discussions with Google and OpenAI to integrate advanced AI capabilities into the iPhone. In the upcoming iOS 18, Apple aims to enhance Siri and other features with the power of the Gemini AI engine. This move could mark a significant leap in smartphone technology, with potential collaborations underscoring Apple's commitment to leading in AI advancements.
Apple Sets Sights on AI Innovation with Google Talks, Aiming to Transform Siri in iOS 18
Today's report by Bloomberg (via MacRumors) comes after Apple confirmed earlier this week that it is in talks with Google to integrate its Gemini AI engine into the iPhone as part of iOS 18.
Apple's CEO, Tim Cook, has pledged to lead the company into new frontiers in AI this year, with iOS 18 at the forefront of these advancements. Apple's internal work focuses on smaller-scale AI features that operate on the device, eliminating the need for an internet connection.
Apple is looking for a partner with the necessary large-scale hardware infrastructure and compute capabilities to enable more powerful cloud-based generative AI features, such as creating images and writing essays based on single prompts.
Apple's virtual assistant, Siri, is poised to undergo a significant transformation with the AI improvements planned for iOS 18. Leaks suggest that Apple intends to leverage large-language models to completely overhaul Siri, positioning it as the 'ultimate virtual assistant.
According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, one of the specific features Apple is working on is a better interaction between Siri and the Messages app, which will allow Siri to auto-complete sentences and answer complex questions.
However, with Nvidia and other AI companies continuing to reshape the technology landscape, some investors are reportedly concerned that Apple will fail to keep up with the pace of change and may not experience the "hypergrowth" expected of it unless the iPhone makers can boost its credibility by deploying generative AI features this year.
Apple and Google in Strategic Talks for AI Integration, Eyeing Breakthroughs in iOS 18
According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is discussing with Google the integration of its Gemini AI engine into the iPhone as part of iOS 18.
Gurman said two companies are in "active negotiations" to license Google's generative large-language models to power new features in iOS 18.
"The two parties haven't decided the terms or branding of an AI agreement or finalized how it would be implemented,” according to the report’s sources.
With the release of iOS 18 later this year, Apple is expected to introduce significant new AI capabilities to its iPhone operating system. According to Gurman, Apple focuses on features that run on the device and do not require an internet connection.
Apple is looking for a partner with large-scale hardware infrastructure and compute capabilities to power additional cloud-based generative AI features, such as creating images and writing essays based on single prompts.
However, the technology still needs to be as advanced as tools developed by Google and other competitors, making a partnership appear to be the better option, according to the most recent report.
If the negotiations fail, Apple may seek out another generative AI provider, such as OpenAI, or work with multiple partners. However, if the talks lead to a deal, it could offset any losses caused by the regulatory pressures on the two companies' existing search partnership.
Google has paid Apple billions of dollars over the years to keep its search engine as the default option in the Safari browser on Apple devices. However, the existing agreement is under regulatory scrutiny in the United States. The Department of Justice and the European Commission are concerned that it contributes to Google's search monopoly.
According to The Information and analyst Jeff Pu, Apple plans to release a generative AI feature for iPhone and iPad in late 2024, coinciding with the release of iOS 18. However, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo stated in August that there is "no sign" of generative AI technology being released in 2024 and that Apple's work on generative AI is "significantly behind its competitors."
