CEO Tim Cook stated during Apple's quarterly results call on Thursday afternoon that the business is developing generative AI software features that would be available to consumers "later this year."
Apple Teases Major AI Integration in Upcoming iOS 18 Update, Cook Hints at Transformative Features
This is consistent with recent reporting by Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, who suggested that iOS 18 would be the "biggest" update in the history of the operating system. Cook repeatedly alluded to generative AI without providing specifics, which seems to indicate that a significant release is imminent this autumn, The Verge reported.
In his prepared remarks, Cook stated, “As we look ahead, we will continue to invest in these and other technologies that will shape the future. That includes artificial intelligence, where we continue to spend a tremendous amount of time and effort, and we’re excited to share the details of our ongoing work in that space later this year.”
When analysts pressed Cook for further information, he provided very little. “Our M.O., if you will, has always been to do work and then talk about work, and not to get out in front of ourselves. And so, we’re going to hold that to this as well. But we have got some things that we’re incredibly excited about, that we’ll be talking about later this year.”
In recent months, smartphones like Google and Samsung have been heavily marketed with AI software features that range from sophisticated photo editing to word processing improvements. You can interpret this as an indication that Apple has big intentions to incorporate AI into its software platforms, iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, later this year, as the corporation rarely gives advance notice of its actions.
According to Cook, “Let me just say that I think there’s a huge opportunity for Apple with generative AI and with AI, without getting into many more details or getting out ahead of myself.”
EU App Ecosystem Undergoes Significant Alterations to Foster Innovation
Regarding potential economic fallout from the modifications being made to the App Store in the European Union, Maestri and Cook were questioned. While Cook stated that it is currently impossible to assess the impact, Maestri stated that the EU accounts for barely 7% of Apple's global App Store revenue. This is because Apple finds it difficult to foresee what users and developers would pick, as per MacRumors.
"We've really focused on privacy, security and usability and we've tried our best to get as close it in the past in terms of things that people love about our ecosystem, but we're going to fall short of providing the maximum amount that we could supply because we need to comply with the with the regulation," Cook said.
- VISION PRO
According to Apple CFO Luca Maestri, a number of major corporations, including Walmart, Nike, Vanguard, Stryker, Bloomberg, and SAP, are developing Vision Pro apps for their clients and staff. "From everyday productivity to collaborative product design to immersive training, we cannot wait to see the amazing things our enterprise customers will create in the months and years to come," Maestri said.
Cook stated that Apple is "incredibly excited about the enterprise opportunities" using Vision Pro. For instance, Walmart boasts a "very cool" merchandising app. Applications for field services, control center/command center operations, cooperation, and design, and more are produced by many companies."Really all over the map," Cook added.
- A.I.
Apple is devoting a "tremendous" amount of time and energy on artificial intelligence, according to Tim Cook, who also promised to release more information about the company's efforts later this year.
“In terms of generative AI which I would guess is your focus, we have a lot of work going on internally, as I've alluded to before. Our MO, if you will, has always been to do work and then talk about work and not to get out in front of ourselves. And so, we're going to hold that to this as well. but we've got some things that we're incredibly excited about, that we'll be talking about later this year," Cook stated.
- SERVICES
Up from $20.7 billion in the same quarter last year, Apple's Services category established a record for sales with $23.1 billion. An annual double-digit growth was seen in paid subscribers. Along with setting records for the December quarter in the Apple Store and AppleCare, Apple also established all-time revenue records in the areas of video, payment services, and advertising cloud services.
- ACCESSORIES
Revenue for the Wearables, Home, and Accessories category fell, from $13.4 billion to $12 billion in the previous year.
- IN USE DEVICES
Apple currently has more than 2.2 billion active devices—iPhones, iPads, and Macs—in the globe.
