A confrontation between federal agents and protesters in Chicago turned violent on Saturday when U.S. Border Patrol officers shot an armed woman, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The incident unfolded in the city’s Brighton Park neighborhood, where demonstrators had gathered to oppose the heightened federal immigration enforcement presence.
Officials said the woman, a U.S. citizen whose identity has not been released, was part of a group that rammed vehicles into cars used by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). She reportedly drove herself to a hospital after being shot. No law enforcement personnel were seriously injured.
The DHS confirmed that ICE agents deployed pepper spray and rubber bullets as tensions escalated. Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as protesters clashed with heavily armed federal officers. Demonstrators accused agents of using excessive force, echoing complaints from protests in other Democratic-led cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and Portland.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced via X (formerly Twitter) that additional “special operations” teams were being sent to stabilize the situation. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker condemned the federal response, revealing that President Donald Trump had demanded he deploy the National Guard. “It is absolutely outrageous and un-American to demand a Governor send military troops within our own borders and against our will,” Pritzker said.
The confrontation followed a string of protests in the Chicago area, including one in Broadview where hundreds clashed with police outside an ICE detention center. Protesters have been calling for an end to what they describe as militarized immigration enforcement and human rights violations by federal agencies.
