BYD Launches M6, Indonesia’s First Electric MPV, Starting at $23,400, at the 31st Indonesia International Motor Show
BYD, the premier electric vehicle manufacturer in China, is making significant progress in another critical EV market by introducing its M6, the first electric multipurpose vehicle (MPV) in Indonesia. The BYD M6 was unveiled on July 22, coinciding with the anticipated continued growth of electric vehicle sales in the region.
BYD unveiled the M6 at the 31st Indonesia International Motor Show. The M6 is the region's inaugural electric multipurpose vehicle (MPV) and is anticipated to satisfy Indonesia's expanding electric vehicle market.
The M6 is offered in three specification levels: Standard 7-seater, Superior 7-seater, and Superior Captain 6-seater.
The initial price is 379,000,000 RP, equivalent to approximately $23,400. The Superior model is priced at 419,000,000 RP ($25,900), while the Superior Captain variant is the most expensive, starting at 429,000,000 RP ($26,500).
According to Electrek, the electric M6 is available with BYD Blade batteries of 55.4 kWh or 71.8 kWh, which provide a NEDC range of up to 261 miles (420 km) or 329 miles (530 km), respectively. With 115 kW rapid charging, the BYD M6 can recharge from 10% to 80% in 40 minutes.
The Song Max serves as the foundation for BYD's M6. A comparable design is visible. Nevertheless, the M6 incorporates contemporary electric vehicle features, such as a closed grille, slender LED headlights, and a prominent BYD logo at the front.
BYD’s M6 Offers Advanced Tech and Green Travel, Boosting Indonesia’s EV Market Expansion
While reaffirming its dedication to the region, BYD stated that the M6 provides Indonesian commuters with a "smarter, greener travel" option.
The interior is equipped with the most recent technology and software from BYD, such as a 12.8 rotating infotainment screen that supports Apple CarPlay and DiLink.
The M6 is approximately the same size as Toyota's Innova (4,735 mm X 1,830 mm X 1,795 mm), one of the most popular MPVs in Indonesia. It measures 4,710 mm in length, 1,810 mm in width, and 1,690 mm in height.
Indonesia's government has unveiled ambitious plans to sell 50,000 four-wheeled electric vehicles (EVs) in 2024, coinciding with the new EV's introduction.
In 2023, the Indonesian Automotive Manufacturers Association reported that 17,501 electric vehicles (EVs) were sold in the region, a 70% increase from the previous year.
While Hyundai and Wuling were responsible for most of the sales last year, BYD and other Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers rapidly expanded in the region.
BYD is expected to commence electric vehicle production in Indonesia in 2026. The $1.3 billion facility will produce 150,000 electric vehicles annually. The Dolphin and Atto 3 are among the other top-selling models in the region that BYD already offers.
