Celebrities are supporting the proposal for the United States government to decrease funding for the police.
This after they are putting their signatures on a petition initiated by the Movement for Black Lives, a coalition for the black-rights organizations.
The petition is part of the Movement for Black Lives week-long activity from June 1 to June 7, 2020, against police brutality and racism.
Among those who inked the petition were Natalie Portman, John Legend, Lizzo, Jane Fonda, Taraji Henson, The Weeknd, Common, America Ferrera, Brie Larson, and soccer star Megan Rapinoe.
Aside from decreasing the police budget, the petition also calls for reallocating the funds to community programs from which the blacks can benefit from.
The petition pointed out to the deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and just recently, George Floyd, whose death was a result of police brutality.
Floyd died last May 25, 2020, in Minneapolis. Footage of his arrest has sparked outrage after it showed how police officer Derek Chauvin had pressed his knee to the back of Floyd's neck for several minutes. The action caused Floyd to go unconscious and later die at the hospital.
A BBC report came out that the four officers involved have been fired, and charges have been filed against them.
The petition noted that Floyd, Arbery, and Taylor had been affected by the crisis that resulted from the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
It further stated that the COVID-19 pandemic is connected and consequential to police brutality, seeing that instead of healthcare, the American government chose to invest more in the police and the military.
Signing petitions to support the end of systemic racism are just one of the activities that have earned the support of celebrities. Some have also taken to the streets to join protests, donating for legal funds while most used their social media accounts to urge their millions of followers to call for policy changes.
