Nancy Metayer Bowen, the 38-year-old vice mayor of Coral Springs, Florida, was fatally shot at her home on Wednesday in what authorities are investigating as a domestic violence homicide. Her husband, Stephen Bowen, 40, was taken into custody and booked at the Broward County jail in Fort Lauderdale as the sole suspect in her death.

A trailblazer in local government, Metayer Bowen made history as the first Black woman and first Haitian American woman to serve as a commissioner in Coral Springs, a city of approximately 134,000 residents located roughly 45 miles north of Miami. She was first elected to the city commission in 2020 and successfully won re-election in 2024, after which her fellow commissioners appointed her to the role of vice mayor. Her political reach extended to the national stage when former Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris appointed her as the Caribbean vote director for her Florida campaign in 2024.

Police responded to a distress call at the couple's residence, where they discovered Metayer Bowen's body before subsequently apprehending her husband. Stephen Bowen, who held the title of chief operating officer at Men of St. Luke — a religious and fraternal nonprofit organization based in Broward County — has not yet been assigned a public defense attorney, and authorities have not confirmed whether he has secured private legal representation.

Tributes poured in from colleagues following the tragic news. Fellow Commissioner Joshua Simmons, who described Metayer Bowen as a "battle buddy," praised her unwavering compassion and dedication to the community. He noted that despite facing harsh public criticism at times, she never lost her genuine concern for the people she served.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding her death.
