Five Nights at Freddy’s (FNAF) is one of the most successful and long-standing indie franchises in the business, owing to its simplistic design and oodles of jump scares. Fans of the series were eagerly waiting for the upcoming sixth installment but the creator of the games recently announced that it was getting canceled. Not surprisingly, hardly anyone believes him.
Creator Scott Cawthon posted the announcement on Steam, noting how the game was actually progressing along. However, he claims to have suddenly realized that he no longer wants to create the game.
“For the last month or so I’ve been dropping hints about a new game; and it’s true that I’d been working on one (call it FNaF 6 if you’d like.) But after forcing myself to keep working on it day after day, I realized something- I just don’t want to work on this,” the announcement post reads. With each game's release, I think the expectations get higher and higher for the next, and rightfully so. Each game SHOULD be better than the last! But that pressure starts to mount, and I fear that I've been neglecting other things in my life for the sake of trying to keep up with those mounting expectations.”
While these sentiments do sound quite reasonable, Cawthon has earned a reputation for being something of a troll. He made claims in the past that ended up being untrue, which is why publications like Tech Times are now having a hard time believing that the developer is being sincere.
If Cawthon does end up canceling FNAF 6 for real, the creator did say that he was not quitting game development forever. Rather, he would move on to a new IPs and create games that he and his fans would enjoy. Then again, considering there is that time he said that Five Nights at Freddy's: Sister Location would be delayed, which turned out to be a joke, perhaps this time would be no different.
