D’Angelo Russell recently spoke with reporters about the trade that landed him with the Golden State Warriors and shared his thoughts about the process. The former Brooklyn Nets guard said that while he heard chatter around the league about the trade, he wasn’t sure it would happen until the confirmation was made.
Still, D’Angelo Russell seems to take the change with stride and said he’s “excited” about his tenure with the Dubs. When asked about what he thinks his addition to the team will bring, the 23-year-old said that he and Stephen Curry would only make the Warriors’ offense that much potent.
With Kevin Durant gone, the team certainly needs another threat on the floor to distract the defense and lighten the load on Curry. This is especially true since Klay Thompson is still recovering from a torn ACL he suffered during Game 6 of the Playoff Finals. D’Angelo Russell could certainly contribute to the Warriors’ offense, but what about when Klay finally returned?
D’Angelo Russell says he can see him playing with Curry, Thompson at the same time
Although the game has now evolved into a fast-paced shootout, having three guards on the floor is already pushing that boundary to the limit. D’Angelo Russell weighed in on this and said that he could see him, Thompson, and Curry playing on the same floor at the same time.
How that would translate remains to be seen, however. As for how he feels about the trade in general, D’Angelo Russell said that he understands the business side of the NBA and admits that he realized it pretty early on in his career having been traded by the Lakers to the Nets a few years ago. Sports journalist Marc Stein said last week that Russell is a player that doesn’t fit in well with the Warriors on account that his position is already taken by Curry and Thompson.
D’Angelo Russell understands that the NBA is a business
Stein added that the only reason the Warriors acquired D’Angelo Russell was due to the organization not wanting to go empty-handed after losing Durant. Russell himself isn’t sure about his tenure with the Dubs and said that he has yet to sit down and have a lengthy discussion with Steve Kerr as the coach is still currently on vacation. But even if he’s traded by the Warriors in the future, Russell admits he’s just taking each day as it is and is resigned to the fact that NBA, when it’s all said and done, is just business.
