The United States continues to be affected by the coronavirus with over 70,000 deaths and over a million cases and counting. Keen to reopen the economy, President Donald Trump revealed that his coronavirus task force will then focus on restarting the country’s economy.
BBC reports that Trump took to social media to break the news of the succeeding duties of his coronavirus task force. A day after saying it was to be disbanded, Trump backtracked and said that the task force will be focused on reviving the economy instead. In a thread of tweets, Trump praised the task force, which is spearheaded by vice president Mike Pence, and its efforts in handling the coronavirus response in the country.
“The White House Coronavirus Task Force, headed by Vice President Mike Pence, has done a fantastic job of bringing together vast highly complex resources that have set a high standard for others to follow in the future. Ventilators, which were few & in bad shape, are now being produced in the thousands, and we have many to spare…” tweeted Trump.
The President then ended his tweet thread, by saying that the Task Force will continue on indefinitely. “Because of this success, the Task Force will continue on indefinitely with its focus on safety & opening up our country again,” tweeted the president.
Trump noted that members may be added or subtracted over time depending on the situation. Whether that would make an impact or not remains to be seen, but Trump previously stated that there would be a different group of people put together that will work on reopening the country.
Previously, during his visit to Phoenix, Arizona, Trump told the press that the coronavirus task force was winding down. The President affirmed his determination to reopen the country after lifting the nationwide lockdown due to the coronavirus. “Mike Pence and the task force have done a great job, but we’re now looking at a little bit of a different form, and that form is safety and opening. And we’ll have a different group probably set up for that,” revealed Trump.
When asked if it was already “mission accomplished,” Trump said no.
