The relations between the United States and China over the past several months has become very frayed due to the handling of the coronavirus. However, despite Donald Trump’s public attacks on China and the Beijing government, a report reveals that his Trump properties continue to import goods made from China as well.
CNN reports that according to US Customs data, Trump properties since 2019 have been importing more than eight tons of goods from China. During the fall, six tons of tables were imported to the US from China for the Trump International Hotel in New York. Just two months ago, in May, the Trump National Golf Club in Los Angeles received a shipment from Shanghai made up of two tons of wooden and glass showcase cabinets. Two days after the cabinets arrived, Trump attacked Beijing, accusing them of “mass worldwide killing.”
This would go against Trump’s campaign slogan “Make America Great Again,” and in conflict with the president’s constant attacks on the Beijing government for their handling of the coronavirus. At the same time, members of the Cabinet have also ironically warned against buying goods from China. The United States is leading the world in death tolls, at over 144,000 Americans dead from the pandemic while the number of people infected by the virus is approaching four million.
Coincidentally, Trump signed an executive order back in April 2017 for federal agencies to “Buy American” and reiterated it in January 2019 and signing an executive order to maximize the 1933 Buy American Act.
Trump Administration officials, according to people knowledgeable in the matter, have also considered banning entry to members of China’s Communist Party in the United States.
Meanwhile, as coronavirus cases soar, Trump has previously revealed he will be resuming his almost daily coronavirus briefings at the White House. The briefings were put to a halt back in April, especially as the Trump administration has sought to reopen the country despite the ongoing pandemic. There was also a shift in tone as Trump now advised Americans to wear face masks when social distancing could not be practiced outside, especially in public places. This is despite infamously refusing to wear a face mask when outside and during official engagements.
