As one of Bethesda’s premier titles on the market, Doom has garnered plenty of praise and fervent admiration from the gaming community already. With the release of the 6.66 update, the title has just upped the ante by making multiplayer DLCs free. Even the main game will be free, though, it’s only for the weekend.
In the blog post announcing the changes and the free DLC offering, Bethesda notes that the guns and equipment are available to all players starting today. What’s more, throughout the weekend, Doom itself will be free-to-play. Never mind that the weekend apparently starts on a Thursday, for four days, players will be able to go all out in their favorite demon-slaying game.
Before anyone gets excited, it’s worth noting that July 20th will only see the Xbox One and PC versions getting the free weekend. PlayStation 4 players will need to wait until July 27th to get their free turn.
There’s also the matter of players only getting to try the first two levels of the game’s main campaign during the weekend, so there’s that to consider. Then again, multiplayer access is unrestricted and with all the free maps and guns, there’s still plenty of fun to be had.
Speaking of the multiplayer mode, there are a few interesting changes as well. Namely, the progression system is getting overhauled where instead of getting random stuff during matches, players will get level-specific items upon completing specific challenges, Polygon reports.
Players who have unlocked some spectacular weapons before the update won’t need to worry, however, as they can still keep their awesome gear. These changes will only affect future unlocks and new players. Considering the free weekend and the lowered price of only $14.99 for the game and all the accompanying DLCs, an influx of new players is only to be expected.
