High blood pressure is prevalent among many people in the world today, with a large portion getting diagnosed with hypertension. A new report reveals another way to help lower blood pressure, and it is all in one drink.
When not kept in check, high blood pressure can bring on serious complications like a heart attack and a stroke. The biggest way to keep blood pressure under control is through a heart-healthy diet and exercise, with the former playing a bigger part. As far as diets are concerned, Express reports that drinking a glass of unsalted tomato juice everyday can help lower blood pressure.
A study was conducted in Japan with 500 participants who were given a large supply of unsalted tomato juice to drink daily. The researchers did medical examinations on the participants on both the start and at the end of the study. At the end of the study, they found that 94 percent of the participants with untreated high blood pressure had significantly lowered blood pressure. 125 of the participants had lower levels of bad cholesterol as well.
The results would suggest that drinking unsalted tomato juice a day can help lower levels of bad cholesterol as well as lower blood pressure levels. However, the researchers said that the results from the study have yet to be determined whether it was really because of drinking the tomato juice everyday for the course of a year or if it was because of other lifestyle factors. It should also be noted that there were limitations in the study, such as statins, which may be the cause of lowered cholesterol levels.
Still, the researchers recommend drinking tomato juice as part of a healthy diet. But because of the possible high sugar content fruit juices may have, it is only advised to drink a glass a day.
Tomato juice is just one of the drinks doctors recommend drinking to lower blood pressure. Orange juice is another drink, due to its high vitamin C content, which not only lowers blood pressure by relaxing and softening blood vessels, it also boosts a person’s overall health. Low-fat milk is also another drink that can help lower blood pressure as it is high in calcium and potassium.
