Germany is facing rising alarm after multiple drones were spotted over major airports and military installations, with authorities warning the incidents could have serious security implications. Over the past two days, drones have been sighted at several key locations, including Munich and Frankfurt airports, prompting widespread flight disruptions and heightening concerns over potential foreign interference.
According to Bild, a confidential police report described the drones seen at Munich Airport as “used militarily,” though it offered no details on their origin. The sightings forced Munich Airport to close both runways for the second time in two days, resulting in dozens of cancelled or diverted flights and stranding more than 11,000 passengers. Operations resumed the next morning but continued with significant delays.
Additional reports indicated drones were seen above a German Federal Police airbase near Gifhorn and an ammunition depot in northern Germany. The Defence Ministry later confirmed similar sightings over the Erding military base near Munich, which hosts drone research operations for the German armed forces.
While some incidents, such as one near Frankfurt Airport, were linked to civilian operators, officials are investigating whether others could be linked to state-sponsored activities. Growing speculation suggests possible Russian involvement, though Moscow has denied any connection.
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, responding to the escalating situation, announced plans to strengthen drone defense capabilities, stating, “We are in an arms race. We want to rise to that challenge.” He pledged to equip police with advanced counter-drone units and push legislation allowing the military to intercept or shoot down unauthorized drones threatening national security.
The string of drone incursions underscores Europe’s vulnerability to unmanned aerial threats, raising questions about airspace security and the preparedness of civilian and military infrastructure to respond to evolving drone warfare tactics.
