Former vice president Joe Biden is becoming the presumptive Democratic nominee, and over the past few days has gotten major endorsements from his fellow Democrats. Today marks another major endorsement as Senator Elizabeth Warren also announced her support for Biden.
Politico reports that Warren shared a video making the announcement on Twitter. “We’re all in this together now...and now it’s up to all of us to help make Joe Biden the next president of the United States. Let’s get to work,” said Warren in the video. The Massachusetts Senator’s endorsement comes after the major endorsements from Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and former President Barack Obama’s announcements of their support.
Warren also assured her supporters who were skeptical of Biden of the reasons why she decided to support him. “When you disagree, he’ll really listen - not just listen, but really hear you. And he has shown throughout this campaign that when you come up with new facts or a good argument, he’s not too afraid or too proud to be persuaded,” said Warren.
With Sanders and Warren’s support, Biden gains a stronger base leading towards the elections in November to face off with President Donald Trump. This further shows the growing unity among the Democratic candidates and prominent Democratic figures and organizations, a stark contrast to the division the Democratic party experienced during the 2016 elections that led to Hillary Clinton’s defeat.
Biden expressed his thanks towards Warren on Twitter as well, echoing her famous phrase during the campaign trail. “We are in a battle for the soul of this nation and I’m proud to have the fiercest of fighters, Senator @EWarren on my side...With her help, we’re going to beat Donald Trump and create a government that works for everyone - not just the wealthy and well-connected,” tweeted the former vice president.
Meanwhile, Bernie Sanders doubles down on his support for Biden to his supporters. The New York Post reports that while speaking to the Associated Press, the Vermont Senator said it would be irresponsible not to vote for Biden as it would only ensure that Trump would be reelected for another term.
“Do we be as active as we can in electing Joe Biden and doing everything we can to move Joe and his campaign in a more progressive direction? Or do we choose to sit out and allow the most dangerous president in modern history to get re-elected?” said Sanders.
