Elon Musk's "thermonuclear lawsuit" against Media Matters is advancing to trial after a U.S. District Judge denied the nonprofit's motion to dismiss. The legal battle stems from Media Matters' claims of antisemitic content on X, which led to several major advertisers suspending their campaigns.

According to Wccftech, in late 2023, Elon Musk pledged to unleash a full-scale war against Media Matters due to the non-profit's alleged deceptive strategies, attempting to portray X as a platform replete with antisemitic content. The "thermonuclear lawsuit" that X filed shortly after that is ultimately on the brink of a high-profile trial.
In late 2023, several major advertisers, such as Apple, Disney, Comcast, and IBM, suspended their advertisements on the X platform after Media Matters discovered that some anti-Semitic content was displayed adjacent to IBM's advertisements.
In response to the escalating boycotts, Elon Musk filed a lawsuit against Media Matters, alleging misconduct. Media Matters, as per X's internal investigations, maintained a feed consisting of accounts that consistently disseminated "extreme, fringe content" and those that belonged to several significant advertisers. Subsequently, it implemented numerous feed refreshes to attain its objectives:
"[Media Matters] resorted to endlessly scrolling and refreshing its unrepresentative, hand-selected feed, generating between 13 and 15 times more advertisements per hour than viewed by the average X user repeating this inauthentic activity until it finally received pages containing the result it wanted: controversial content next to X’s largest advertisers’ paid posts."
Media Matters has consistently maintained that Elon Musk's litigation was "frivolous" and intended to "bully X's critics into silence."

This brings us to the present day, when U.S. District Judge Reed O'Connor denied Media Matter's petition to dismiss X's lawsuit, stating that the plaintiff "has properly pled its claims." Consequently, the forthcoming court battle is set to continue.
Today's development is part of the ongoing dispute between Elon Musk and some of X's largest advertisers. In the past, Musk has even used an expletive to convey his frustration with the boycotting advertisers.
