As kids, the twins Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen took shifts in playing the role of Michelle Tanner, who was one of the main characters in the original series. So when Netflix confirmed it is canceling the show after “Fuller House” season 5, many fans started hoping that the Olsen twins would be part of it even just for a cameo appearance.
The explanation of Michelle’s absence in the Netflix spin-off series is very close to what the Olsen twins are doing in real life. It was mentioned more than once that Michelle is busy as a fashion designer based in New York that is practically the same story for Mary-Kate and Ashley. But will there be any chance for them to appear in “Fuller House” season 5 considering the special circumstances?
The latest update on this matter came from Candace Cameron Bure, who said last February that Michelle would not be coming back even for “Fuller House” season 5. “You heard it from me first: They will never come back!” the actress told Us Weekly. “They are never coming back on the show! They don’t want to be on the show. The answer’s no!”
One of the reasons that make “Fuller House” a special spin-off is the fact that almost all of the actors who played main characters in the original series signed to reprise their roles. Unfortunately, Mary-Kate and Ashley did not share that same enthusiasm that explains why Michelle is no-show since the show premiered on Netflix in 2016. That does not seem to change for “Fuller House” season 5.
It was not a total surprise, though, as several bosses of the show have also revealed before that Mary-Kate and Ashley have turned down offers to join the cast in some capacity. In 2017, series creator Jeff Franklin told TVLine that he grew tired of repeatedly inviting the Olsen twins. “They just don’t seem interested in coming. It’s been three years of invitations, so they know the door is open. It’s up to them to decide if they want to come play or not,” Franklin said.
Going farther back before “Fuller House” season 1 aired, executive producer Bob Boyett revealed that Ashley was resolved she will not be coming back because her last acting stint was when she was 17. As for Mary-Kate, she reportedly said, “It would have to be me because Ash doesn’t want to do it. But the timing is so bad for us.” Meanwhile, “Fuller House” season 5 is slated to premiere in fall.
