Israel has allowed over 100 aid trucks carrying flour, baby food, and medical supplies into Gaza this week, but distribution has stalled due to security concerns, according to UN officials. Despite the entry of trucks through Kerem Shalom and sightings of aid in Rafah and Deir Al-Balah, supplies have not reached Gaza’s residents, many of whom face famine. The World Food Programme warned that none of the limited aid had reached the population, with thousands of tons of supplies still stuck at crossing points.
The humanitarian crisis comes as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed willingness for a temporary ceasefire only if it includes the release of remaining hostages. Meanwhile, airstrikes continued, killing at least 50 Palestinians on Wednesday. Israel targeted over 100 locations, including alleged Hamas infrastructure.
Israel initially blocked aid in March, claiming Hamas was intercepting supplies—a charge Hamas denies. Amid international pressure, Israel is now allowing some aid under a new U.S.-backed distribution model using private contractors. However, the UN has declined to participate, citing neutrality concerns.
The war has sparked global criticism, including from traditional allies like the U.S., Britain, and Canada. At home, opposition figures like Yair Golan and former PM Ehud Olmert have condemned the government's actions. Golan warned that Israel risks becoming a "pariah state."
Since Hamas' October 7, 2023 attack that killed 1,200 Israelis and led to 251 hostage abductions, Israel’s retaliatory campaign has killed over 53,600 Palestinians, according to Gaza health officials. Public opinion in Israel shows rising support for a ceasefire tied to hostage returns, but hardliners push for total Hamas defeat. Netanyahu, facing corruption charges and potential ICC arrest, remains aligned with these demands.
