Germany's opposition conservatives, led by Friedrich Merz, secured a major victory in the national elections, positioning him as the next chancellor. The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) also made history with its best-ever result, shaking up the political landscape.

World leaders quickly reacted. U.S. President Donald Trump hailed the results, comparing Germany’s shift to America's political changes. French President Emmanuel Macron congratulated Merz while reaffirming strong Franco-German ties. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized cooperation on security and economic growth. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy welcomed Merz's win, highlighting Germany’s role in supporting Ukraine and strengthening Europe.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed hopes for deepening ties with Germany. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stressed the importance of increased defense spending under Merz’s leadership. Austria’s far-right Freedom Party leader, Herbert Kickl, claimed the election broke the establishment's "firewall," while Italy's Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini praised AfD’s success, denouncing illegal immigration and green policies.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala both celebrated the CDU/CSU’s victory, calling it a win for Europe.

With Germany at a political crossroads, Merz’s leadership will shape the country's future amid rising nationalist sentiments and growing economic and security challenges. The election results mark a significant shift, setting the stage for a transformative era in German and European politics.
