Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Wednesday that the Israeli military is pressing forward with its offensive against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, declaring that forces are on the verge of capturing Bint Jbeil — a key Hezbollah stronghold. Speaking in a video address, Netanyahu emphasized that operations will continue even as ceasefire negotiations gain momentum on the international stage.
Netanyahu confirmed that Israeli troops are actively reinforcing a security zone in southern Lebanon while simultaneously engaging in peace talks with Beirut — the first such diplomatic negotiations in more than four decades. He attributed Lebanon's willingness to negotiate to Israel's demonstrated military strength, noting that other nations are also seeking dialogue with Israel on their own terms.
Israel has outlined two central objectives in its Lebanon negotiations: the full dismantlement of Hezbollah's military infrastructure and the establishment of a durable, long-term peace. Netanyahu made clear that any lasting agreement must be built on security guarantees, not political compromise alone.
The renewed conflict between Israel and the Iran-backed militant group erupted following joint U.S.-Israeli airstrikes on Iran on February 28, which triggered a broader escalation across the Middle East. Since then, Israeli forces have intensified their campaign across southern Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah positions and command centers.
On the matter of Iran's nuclear program, Netanyahu stated that Israel and the United States remain closely aligned. Both countries are pushing for the removal of enriched nuclear material from Iranian territory, the elimination of Iran's uranium enrichment capabilities, and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. While acknowledging the uncertainty surrounding how the standoff will unfold, Netanyahu stressed that Israel is fully prepared for any potential escalation, including a resumption of direct hostilities.
