Vice President JD Vance publicly declared his support for President Donald Trump's handling of the ongoing war with Iran on Monday, moving to silence growing speculation that his well-documented anti-war views were creating a rift between him and the commander-in-chief.
The war, which began on February 28, had gone several weeks without Vance offering any clear, public endorsement of Trump's military approach. That silence fueled questions — especially after Trump himself acknowledged that Vance was "philosophically a little bit different" and perhaps "less enthusiastic" about the conflict with Iran.
Standing beside Trump during an Oval Office event, Vance addressed those concerns head-on. When asked whether he was fully onboard with the war and if he held any reservations, Vance reaffirmed a shared stance with the president: Iran must never be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon. He then drew a sharp contrast between Trump and previous administrations, saying the key difference this time is leadership quality. "I trust President Trump to get the job done, to do a good job for the American people, and to make sure that the mistakes of the past are not repeated," Vance stated.
The remarks carry notable weight given Vance's history. Once a self-described "never-Trumper," he penned a 2023 Wall Street Journal opinion piece praising Trump's first term specifically because no new wars were started between 2017 and 2021. Vance, a Marine Corps veteran, has been a consistent critic of what he views as reckless U.S. military entanglements abroad. He has also been a vocal opponent of American weapons aid to Ukraine amid its conflict with Russia.
Monday's statement signals that whatever private disagreements may exist, Vance is publicly aligning himself with Trump's foreign policy decisions as the Iran conflict continues to unfold.
