When Elon Musk revealed the Tesla Roadster 2.0, it was promised to be the fastest mass production car ever. However, one Japanese firm seems intent on challenging this claim by matching the Roadster’s record. Called the Owl from the company Aspark, the electric hypercar can go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 1.9 seconds. This is the same acceleration speed that the Roadster 2.0 has.
The company released footage of their achievement, which shows them breaking their previous claim that they can accelerate to 60Mph from a full stop in two seconds. However, there are a few things worth considering when checking out the video. As LeftLaneNews pointed out, it seems the vehicle is using Hoosier tires, which are known for being sticky racing accessories.
What’s more, the tires were clearly being warmed up via burnout. This could have given the Owl the edge it needed to achieve such a staggering acceleration speed.
On the other hand, the car does come with 430 horsepower courtesy of its two electric motors 563 lb-ft of torque. The car itself was trimmed down so that it could achieve this acceleration record, leading to a mere 1,875 lbs. in weight.
Naturally, with a test record like that, the Owl would be pitted against the Roadster in terms of speed claims. However, Musk’s guarantee seems to imply that it’s done using actual street tires. If the Owl can do the same thing, perhaps it stands a chance at taking the Roadster 2.0’s crown.
On the other hand, there are other factors to consider as well. In the case of Tesla, production troubles have plagued the company since the beginning, which may lead to Aspark releasing its vehicle to the market sooner. Then again, the Roadster 2.0 is likely to cost only $200,000 while the Owl is expected to come with a price tag of $4.4 million, Tech Times reports.
That is a huge difference and one that could still put Tesla on top.
