As free agency looms closer, the free agency narrative surrounding Kawhi Leonard is heating up once more. The latest rumor involving the two-time Defensive Player of the Year claims that he’s going to be leaving the Toronto Raptors for the Brooklyn Nets.
Brooklyn Nets journalist Anthony Puccio is the source of this new speculation, add that Kevin Durant and Tobias Harris are also interested in joining with the organization. The Nets can potentially make room for two superstars in their roster if they decide to let go of D’Angelo Russel, find a team willing to take on Allen Crabbe’s contract, and part ways with its other free agents.
Of course, similar to other rumors, it’s best to take this one with a grain of salt since the aforementioned stars have yet to comment on this latest claim. This isn’t surprising since the Playoffs is at full steam at the moment and all three are focusing on the task at hand. Kawhi Leonard and the Toronto Raptors are currently tied with Philadelphia Sixers in their series one to one.
As can be expected, the 27-year-old remains the top priority for the Sixers. In the second match of the series, Kawhi Leonard managed to score 35 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and distributed six assists. Coming in second is Pascal Siakam with 21 points, eight rebounds, and three assists.
Third place for the Raptors is Kyle Lowry with 20 points, four rebounds, and five assists. Unfortunately, the trio’s effort was eclipsed by the unremarkable performance by the rest of the team barring Danny Green. Still, the loss isn’t as devastating for the Raptors and would only serve to fire up Kawhi Leonard in game three.
As for the young star’s future, there’s still no news what his decision is going to be. However, fans and NBA pundits alike are convinced that if the Raptors doesn’t make it to the Playoffs, then Kawhi Leonard will highly likely take his talents to other teams. As such, the team will need to step up their game if they want to keep the talented forward, particularly for the bench who has been struggling to play their roles.
