UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is confronting a critical political test as voters in Gorton and Denton, Greater Manchester, head to the polls in a closely contested by-election. Recent surveys suggest the race is too close to call, with Labour Party, Reform UK, and the Green Party competing for a near-equal share of the vote. The outcome could have significant implications for Starmer’s leadership and the broader UK political landscape.

The Manchester by-election follows a series of challenges for Starmer, including policy reversals and controversy surrounding the appointment of Labour veteran Peter Mandelson as Britain’s ambassador to Washington. Mandelson has faced scrutiny over past associations, though he denies any wrongdoing. The decision has sparked criticism within Labour ranks and prompted questions about Starmer’s political judgment.

In an effort to solidify support, Starmer made a surprise campaign visit earlier this week, framing the vote as a direct contest between Labour and Nigel Farage’s Reform UK. Labour leaders have argued that backing the Green Party could split the left-leaning vote, effectively benefiting Reform UK. The Greens have gained traction with policies focused on the cost of living crisis and their stance on Gaza, appealing to progressive voters.

Labour comfortably secured the seat during its 2024 general election landslide, but the resignation of the incumbent MP reopened the contest. Starmer’s decision to back local councillor Angeliki Stogia over Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham reportedly caused friction within the party. Stogia now faces Reform candidate Matt Goodwin and Green contender Hannah Spencer in a campaign marked by intense debate.

While losing this traditionally safe Labour seat would represent a setback, party insiders suggest upcoming local elections in May across England, Scotland, and Wales may prove to be the more decisive measure of Starmer’s leadership strength.
