North Korean leader Kim Jong Un underscored the importance of ideology in the nation’s military, stating that weapons alone are merely "ironware" without political and moral strength. Speaking at Kim Il Sung University of Politics, Kim highlighted that true military power comes from unwavering loyalty to the ruling Workers' Party.
His speech comes amid reports of significant losses among North Korean troops fighting alongside Russia in Ukraine. Despite these challenges, Kim reaffirmed the Korean People's Army's (KPA) goal of becoming the world's most formidable military force. He emphasized that political, ideological, and moral superiority define the army’s strength, not just advanced weaponry.
North Korea has not officially acknowledged its military assistance to Russia, yet intelligence suggests a growing involvement. Kim praised his forces for their dedication, stating that their willingness to endure hardships for the nation reflects the army’s qualitative superiority.
Although he did not directly mention the U.S. or South Korea, Kim has previously blamed them for escalating tensions in the region. While U.S. President Donald Trump has hinted at outreach efforts, North Korea continues to push forward with nuclear weapons development as a countermeasure.
Kim Il Sung University of Politics plays a critical role in training officers for the country's extensive military apparatus, ensuring strict political control under the ruling party. Kim’s address reaffirmed the leadership’s focus on ideological indoctrination, reinforcing loyalty as the backbone of North Korea’s military strategy.
