Kumho Tire, a South Korean tire manufacturer that is a subsidiary of Doublestar Chinese tire company, revealed late last week that it has previously signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Van Korea, a local auto retailer.
Kumho Tire entered into a partnership with Van Korea as part of its goal of commercializing its smart tire system. According to The Korea Herald, as part of the deal, the former will be supplying its “Majesty X Solus“ smart tires for the auto retailer company’s Hyundai Carnival lineup. It will also provide tire sensing and monitoring technologies.
“In this era of smart mobility, Kumho Tire is accelerating its research in smart tires,” a company official said in a statement. “Kumho Tire’s use of IoT technology has made the collection of tire data, assessment of tire conditions, and the management of tire inventory possible.”
The tiremaker has been collaborating with various communication firms in the country to develop and produce a smart tire system that will include a sensor installed within the rubber tire. This will be able to monitor the tire’s temperature and air pressure while gathering data on the car’s acceleration and driving time.
The collected information will subsequently be dispatched through a wireless communication device to warn the driver if there are any irregularities. It was shared that Kumho Tire’s innovative tire system has already been tested in Sucheon, South Jeolla Province and concluded with good results.
In any case, Kumho Tire said that it developed the smart tire system as part of its efforts to keep up with the “smart mobility” trend in the auto industry. It will also give customers a safer and more comfortable driving experience.
“We will continue to work with related institutions to provide customers with a safer and more comfortable mobility environment in the future,” the company executive added.
Meanwhile, Business Korea reported that Kumho Tire has recently won a Home Red Dot Award for its urban air mobility (UAM) tire system. the company was chosen to be the best in the design concept category at the 2022 Red Dot Design Award. The company was recognized for its Airborne Tire model.
