Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado says she expects to return to Venezuela before the end of 2026 and is calling for faster action toward free and fair elections, according to an interview with Reuters. Machado stressed that the country urgently needs a democratic process to address growing public frustration and avoid deeper instability. She warned that delaying elections could increase the risk of unrest as Venezuelans continue to demand political change.

Machado said recent political developments have raised expectations across Venezuela, with many citizens hoping for major reforms in government and the economy. In her view, those expectations must be guided through a peaceful and civic electoral path. She argued that if people lose confidence that current efforts will lead to real democratic change, public anger could spiral beyond control. To prepare for credible elections, Machado said the electoral roll should be updated, previously excluded voters should be included, and new members of the electoral council should be chosen. She estimated those steps could be completed within eight or nine months.

The longtime opposition figure also reflected on her personal situation after leaving Venezuela in December, despite a long-standing travel ban. After spending more than a year largely in hiding following the disputed 2024 election, Machado has mainly stayed in the United States. She said reuniting with her three adult children has been deeply meaningful, especially after years of political pressure and personal sacrifice. Still, she made clear that her priority is returning home and standing alongside the Venezuelan people as the country moves toward a democratic transition.

During a recent visit to Madrid, Machado addressed thousands of Venezuelans living in exile and told them they could soon return home. She also criticized Spain’s government for not taking a stronger stand against the Maduro regime, while expressing appreciation for other European voices that support democratic values in Venezuela. Machado said she is counting the days until she can return, convinced that Venezuela can rebuild lasting institutions and restore freedom for future generations.
