McDonald’s Japan is adding a new twist to its famous Bacon Potato Pie by introducing the Cheese Bacon Potato Pie. This limited-time offering, available from July 31 to the end of August, includes cheddar and gouda for a rich, flavorful experience.
McDonald’s Japan Elevates Classic Bacon Potato Pie with New Cheese Bacon Potato Pie, Featuring Cheddar and Gouda
At McDonald’s in Japan, pies aren’t limited to the dessert menu. The chain has been making a roaring trade in Bacon Potato Pies since its first release in 1990. However, these pies are not always available as they are only a limited-time product. This year, they are evolving into a new form known as the Cheese Bacon Potato Pie.
This tasty new evolution adds two kinds of melted cheese to the hearty filling: creamy potatoes, chopped onions, and smoky bacon pieces. Cheddar and Gouda combine for a flavor explosion in the cheese sauce inside the pie and the crust, giving it a golden hue.
According to SoraNews24, like many limited-edition releases, this menu item has a new commercial to help promote it. The scene is set at a Japanese summer festival, where singer, model, actress, and former Nogizaka46 idol group member Mai Shiraishi plays the role of a stall owner selling pies.
McDonald's Japan Launches Festive Ad Featuring Mai Shiraishi to Promote New Cheese Bacon Potato Pie
In the ad, Shiraishi encourages a festival-goer to try the new pie, clinching the deal by saying “tabete bikkuri”(“eat it and you’ll be surprised”) while striking a dance pose reminiscent of those seen at summertime Bon Odori (Obon Dance) Festivals.
Upon taking a bite, the festival-goer is surprised, and the commercial ends with the familiar melody of “Tanko Bushi,” a song used in Bon dances, playing in the background. However, there’s a cheesy twist to the lyrics, as instead of “Tsuki ga deta deta” (“The moon has come out”), the singer sings “Cheese ga deta deta” (“The cheese has come out“).
The new ad will be broadcast on TV nationwide from July 30, a day before the Cheese Bacon Potato Pies is released on July 31. Priced at 190 yen (US$1.24) each, the pies will be on the menu until the end of August.
