U.S. First Lady Melania Trump chaired a United Nations Security Council meeting on children and education in conflict on Monday, marking a historic first for the 15-member body responsible for maintaining international peace and security. Her leadership came just days after U.S. President Donald Trump and Israel launched military strikes on Iran, escalating tensions in the Middle East and prompting warnings from the United Nations about child safety.
The session, titled “Children, Technology, and Education in Conflict,” was organized as the United States assumed the rotating presidency of the U.N. Security Council. It marked the first time the spouse of a sitting world leader has presided over the council. The plan for Melania Trump to chair the meeting was announced before the U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran.
In her address, the first lady emphasized the importance of education in promoting tolerance and long-term global peace. “The U.S. stands with all of the children throughout the world. I hope soon peace will be yours,” she told the council, reinforcing America’s stated commitment to protecting children in armed conflict.
The meeting unfolded against allegations from Iran that U.S. and Israeli strikes hit a girls’ primary school in Minab, reportedly killing 165 students. Reuters could not independently verify those claims. Iran’s U.N. envoy criticized the United States for convening a child protection meeting while allegedly carrying out military actions affecting civilians. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio denied that American forces deliberately targeted schools, while Israel’s U.N. ambassador expressed regret over civilian casualties and cited conflicting reports.
UNICEF warned that the military escalation represents a dangerous moment for millions of children in the region, echoing U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ call for an immediate ceasefire. China’s U.N. ambassador also urged thorough investigations into attacks on schools and accountability for violations against children.
Despite President Trump’s previous criticism of the United Nations and concerns over unpaid U.S. contributions, his administration’s leadership of the Security Council highlights a renewed engagement with global diplomacy. Melania Trump, known for her advocacy on children’s issues, has previously called for the protection of vulnerable youth affected by war, including Ukrainian children displaced during the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
