Despite not being interested in politics, former first lady Michelle Obama remains to be one of the most influential Democrats in the party and one of the most influential political figures overall. As one of the speakers during the opening day of the Democratic convention, Michelle made a powerful argument against Donald Trump during her address.
Former first lady Michelle Obama delivered a direct swipe at Trump during her pre-taped address at the partisan event. Michelle mentioned the administration’s failure to control the pandemic within the United States and criticized the hate and division stoked by Trump especially at a time when there is civil unrest in the midst of a pandemic. Perhaps the most striking point of her address was that she called Trump the “wrong president,” who is incapable of doing his job as commander-in-chief.
“Let me be as honest and as clear as I possibly can. Donald Trump is the wrong president for our country. He has had more than enough time to prove that he can do the job, but he is clearly over his head. He cannot meet this moment. He simply cannot be who we need him to be for us. It is what it is,” said the former first lady, referencing the remark Trump made about the death toll from COVID-19 in the US which has long exceeded 100,000.
Michelle also offered a grim warning as to what would happen should Trump get reelected in November and urged Americans regardless of political leanings, to choose former vice president Joe Biden. She joins the lineup of Democrats, including four Republicans during the convention’s opening night, to choose Biden over Trump.
Following the former first lady’s address at the DNC, Trump ripped into Michelle for using outdated numbers of people who died from COVID-19. At the time of her address, the death toll from COVID-19 in the US was over 150,000. As of late, the number of deaths from COVID-19 has now exceeded 170,000, meaning 20,000 Americans have lost their lives to the coronavirus since then. Trump also told reporters that Michelle should have made her address to the Democratic party live instead of pre-recording it.
Trump continued to attack the former first lady on Twitter following his remarks to the press, boasting about his administration’s achievements and had it not been for her husband, Barack Obama, he would not be in the White House as president in the first place.
