No one seriously expects “Mordhau” to be the next Fortnite or even come close to the success that Epic’s Battle Royale game has seen. However, it is possible for this new entry into the market to be the medieval version of the hugely popular title. In fact, the number of players that are trying the game out for themselves is causing the servers some issues. If handled right, this could be the next big thing.
For some context, “Mordhau” is a fighting game with a medieval feel that involves swords, poleaxes, full suits of armor, and all-out melees. It features several modes, including a Battle Royale one that is a hit among players, PC Gamer notes. The sudden popularity of the title has led to server issues, which a statement from one of the developers, Marko Grgurovic explains.
“Part of our server infrastructure couldn't handle the large amount of requests involving rewards, so it got slowed down to a crawl. We've been doing maintenance and upgrades and optimizations throughout the whole day and night, and it's doing much better now. Of course at the same time we also hit a new all-time high of concurrent numbers, so it can be a bit of an uphill battle, because we're a tiny studio with only two programmers on the team,” the statement reads.
Two programmers mean that the studio does not have a ton of personnel to try and fix the issues that have come up with the servers in a timely manner. While this is unfortunate, it also speaks to just how unexpectedly huge the reception of “Mordhau” has been. In terms of feedback and impressions alone, this indie project has already surpassed what AAA counterparts like “For Honor” have received.
This incident also highlights the potential of what “Mordhau” can become. If it turns out to be the medieval counterpart to “Fortnite,” it is going to explode in popularity very soon.
