One of the most talked-about National Football League (NFL) offseason speculations recently involves the Dallas Cowboys, and it's running back Ezekiel Elliott. There have been rumors that the player is looking to holdout, but the management says otherwise.
What is a holdout?
Many are getting interested in how this one will play out because, around this time, NFL teams are going back to their respective training camps. The 100th season of the league will officially kick off on Sept. 5.
When a player decides to holdout, he essentially skips training camps and asserts to enter a new and better deal with the team before the regular season begins. Of course, not everyone can afford to holdout. But this is often a player’s way to persuade his team to pay him fairly and the leverage, of course, depends on their value to the franchise as an athlete. In this NFL offseason, Elliott has become one of the few players reported to holdout and might miss the training camp.
The 24-year-old Ohio State alum joined the NFL in 2016 and signed a four-year contract with the Cowboys. The said deal reportedly included a $16.3 million signing bonus with guaranteed $24.5 million and an average annual salary of around $6.2 million. He is poised to become the highest-paid running back in the coming season. And if a holdout is on the cards for Elliott, he might eventually get the Cowboys to offer him a new and more favorable contract before the 2019 regular season starts.
Will Ezekiel Elliott holdout?
The Dallas football team is slated to board a plane all together to Oxnard, California on Thursday while their training camp officially starts Friday. Now, to the question of whether or not Elliott is opting for holdout, Ian Rapoport reported he is considering it but has not decided yet. Meanwhile, Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett has some enlightening updates. Garrett is expecting Elliott to show up added, “I've heard nothing different on that.”
Holdouts are often seen on veterans and players playing under their rookie contract with an NFL team. Elliott was drafted by the Cowboys, which meant that he could negotiate only with this franchise at the time. Meanwhile, Elliott had a great season in 2018 contributing 304 rushing attempts, 1,434 rushing yards gained, and 6 rushing touchdowns.
