Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to meet U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House, as indirect talks between Israel and Hamas progress toward a potential U.S.-brokered Gaza ceasefire and hostage-release deal. Trump expressed optimism on Sunday, saying a deal could be reached this week, while Netanyahu highlighted the importance of U.S. support, particularly after recent American air strikes on Iranian nuclear sites.
This marks Netanyahu’s third visit to the White House since Trump’s return to office in January. The meeting follows a U.S.-led ceasefire that ended a 12-day Israel-Iran war. Israeli officials hope this confrontation opens doors to broader regional diplomacy, potentially including Lebanon, Syria, and Saudi Arabia.
Israeli negotiators are in Qatar for indirect talks with Hamas, mediated by Qatar and Egypt. The proposed 60-day truce includes a phased release of hostages, Israeli troop withdrawals, and discussions to end the war. While Hamas demands a full cessation of hostilities before releasing the remaining 50 hostages, Israel insists on their release and the dismantling of Hamas before any ceasefire is finalized.
Netanyahu will also thank Trump for the strikes on Iran and discuss Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Trump claims the air strikes have permanently set back Tehran’s nuclear program and vowed to prevent Iran from restarting it. Iran denies seeking nuclear weapons.
Despite opposition from hardline Israeli coalition members, domestic pressure may push Netanyahu’s government to support a deal, as the 21-month Gaza war has displaced millions and caused over 57,000 Palestinian deaths, according to Gaza’s health ministry. The UN warns of looming famine in Gaza.
Trump has also drawn attention for defending Netanyahu in his ongoing corruption trial, arguing the legal process could hinder diplomatic efforts.
A breakthrough in Gaza talks could emerge this week.
