According to Sole Retriever, on June 30, Nike Sportswear ignited the sneaker and hip-hop communities with an Instagram reel that hinted at the imminent return of an emblematic classic: the Nike Dunk High Wu-Tang. This ultra-rare sneaker is profoundly rooted in the legacy of one of hip-hop's most influential groups and sneaker culture.
The teaser suggests that Nike is reintroducing the Nike Dunk High Wu-Tang, a pair replicating the colorblocking of the original Nike Dunk High Iowa. The 'Be True to Your School' collection, initially introduced in 1985, included the Iowa colorway. This collection showcased the team colors of various institutions throughout the United States. In 1998 and 1999, Nike retroed the entire collection, which caught the attention of the Wu-Tang Clan. The black and yellow Dunk perfectly matched their aesthetic, marking a significant chapter in the sneaker's historical journey.
Drew Greer Spearheaded the Creation of Ultra-Limited Wu-Tang Dunk Highs, Now Coveted by Collectors
Drew Greer, the Global Footwear Product Director for Nike Sportswear then, was responsible for developing an ultra-limited edition of Wu-Tang Dunks. These sneakers were designed with the same color scheme as the Dunk High Iowa but were adorned with the symbolic Wu-Tang Clan logo on the lateral heel.
The initial rumors indicated that only 36 pairs of these shoes were manufactured and produced in minimal quantities. Nevertheless, Greer clarified on the Complex Sneakers Podcast that 100 pairs were indeed produced, with 50 pairs allocated to him and the remaining 50 to Comb Control. Subsequently, these pairings were assigned to members of the Wu-Tang Clan and influential figures at Loud Records, the group's record label.
The Wu-Tang Dunk Highs have since achieved legendary status in the sneaker community. Collectors regard them as akin to the sacred grail, with some pairs fetching as much as $50,000 on the secondary market. The Wu-Tang Clan's cultural cachet and the rarity of these sneakers have rendered them a highly sought-after piece of sneaker and hip-hop history.
