When the Nintendo NES Classic was discontinued a few months ago due to supply shortages, fans of the retro unit were outraged and dismayed. The company is about to go another round with the $79 SNES reboot, where fans will be able to play some of the most popular games of the early 90s. Nintendo also said that it has learned its lesson and won’t repeat the same mistakes as with the NES.
The massive popularity that met the NES Classic was certainly unexpected since Nintendo only intended the unit to be a holiday affair. Something of a throwback to the good old days when DLCs and microtransactions were still a far-off nightmare. Predicting similar enthusiasm, a company spokesperson indicates that there will be a huge number of SNES Classic units this time around, BBC reports.
"We aren't providing specific numbers, but we will produce significantly more units of Super NES Classic Edition than we did of NES Classic Edition," the spokesperson said.
With regards to how long the company will keep producing the units, Nintendo revealed that the initial projection puts manufacturing until the end of 2017. This is due to the video game icon’s massive investment in the Switch, which is its main focus.
"Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Super NES Classic Edition is currently planned to ship from Sept. 29 until the end of calendar year 2017," Nintendo revealed. "Our long-term efforts are focused on delivering great games for the Nintendo Switch system and continuing to build momentum for that platform, as well as serving the more than 63 million owners of Nintendo 3DS family systems. We are offering Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Super NES Classic Edition in special recognition of the fans who show tremendous interest our classic content."
On the other hand, just because it’s a highly anticipated console, this doesn’t mean that the SNES Classic is going to be an instant hit. To help it become as popular or more popular than the NES, Engadget suggests a few additions to the unit, including the ability to add more games and providing longer controller cables.
