Peoples Choice Awards 2017: Johnny Depp Wins Fave Movie Icon, Thanks Fans for “Trust” During Amber Heard Divorce

Johnny Depp was one of the biggest winners during Wednesday’s 2017 People’s Choice Awards. Depp was declared winner in the awards’ Favorite Movie Icon category, of which he was pitted against Denzel Washington, Samuel L. Jackson, Tom Cruise, and Tom Hanks, according to theWrap.

The Guardian notes that the win would be his 14th People’s Choice gong, and that the category winner is based by public vote. In a message, he credited his fans’ unwavering support.

"I came here for one reason tonight, for one reason and one reason only, for you, the people. Through whatever good times or bad you've stood by me and trusted me,” Depp said.

He added, “And you’ve graciously invited me here once again tonight, so I appreciate that so much. You have no idea how much I appreciate that. I was very deeply affected by the kindness of your recognition and by your well wishes to my family and myself, which is why it’s especially meaningful for me to be here in front of you to say thank you.”

The win is a welcome surprise for Depp, who picked the award up at the prestigious Microsoft Theater stage, five days after his divorce from actress Amber Heard was finalized. E! News said the former couple finally reached a settlement since divorce papers were filed back in May of last year. Allegations of abuse by Heard and Depp were largely played out in the public.

Moreover, it is to be noted that despite not having a stellar reception at the movies in the last few years, the award seem to signify that there are fans who still adore Depp on the silver screen. The Guardian said Depp’s recent films such as Alice Through the Looking Glass, Mortdecai, and Yoga Hosers were not well-received, and that fans of JK Rowling’s Harry Potter universe were not happy with Depp’s cameo and future film role in the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them franchise.
