Backward compatibility is something that fans have been demanding that Sony offer with its next-generation PlayStation consoles for a long time now. For a while there, it was beginning to look like the Japanese company was simply going to ignore these sentiments. However, new patents for the PlayStation 5 suggest that consumer demand has won out.
As Metro reports, there are new patents that are highly suggestive of the fact that the PlayStation 5 is going to be backward compatible. This is great news for those who have been itching to play older games on the newer console despite the fact they are graphically inferior.
If there is any doubt that this is going to be the case, the patent’s title is “Simulation of legacy bus operation for backward compatibility.” This hardly leaves any room for misinterpretation that Sony is at least prioritizing the feature for the PlayStation 5. Now, if only it can also play nice with other companies and open the gate for crossplay without restrictions.
Coming back to the main point of the story, this new development gives people more reasons to look forward to the PlayStation 5. On top of the inevitable high-quality games that will be featured on the console, there have been some rumored additions and changes that are making players excited. For example, a more streamlined and user-friendly interface has long been a top request for the console.
Unfortunately, there is still no word on when the PlayStation 5 is going to be released. Sony is currently keeping a tight lid on this tidbit and for good reason. The company wants to build as much hype around the console as possible so that it can ride the wave of initial enthusiasm all the way to the bank. With backward compatibility being added, the console is now more likely to attract gamers.
